'Aves' 3

One of the more interesting aspects of birds is that they’re almost two creatures at once. That is, they are one thing on the ground and another in the air.

Consider the heron, tall and to some, gangly on their two long legs on terra firma. In the air however, they are a different thing. With their powerful wings, they soar and glide with graceful flaps.

Birds in flight reveal nature’s uncanny adaptations. Even the largest of birds become paragons of aerodynamics when in flight. They know the secrets of thermals and how to use them to gain altitude. Watching an eagle swirl effortlessly around on one of these thermals makes me yearn to know such freedom.
